Peter Lewis, Enfield head of children’s services who’s been chosen to fill Sharon Shoesmith’s still-smoking boots at Haringey, is to earn £200,000, double Shoesmith’s salary.
Lewis was reportedly praised by Ofsted for his stint at Enfield.
Ofsted was also, completely incidentally, the body that praised Shoesmith’s department in Haringey so highly, giving it three stars (whatever they are) even when it knew Baby P had been killed under its supervision.
Well Lewis, who doesn’t lack self-confidence, may indeed be the man for the job.
But hasn’t this dozy government learned yet that throwing money at problems isn’t always the way to solve them?
If Lewis truly is the man for the job he surely doesn’t need to double his salary to prove it. What about duty?
