Celebrity TV star Jade Goody is to be baptised in hospital today as her cervical cancer is thought to be entering its last stages. Meanwhile the media, including her voluble spokesman Max Clifford, have finally (and probably temporarily) rowed back their obsessive coverage of the story although now their focus is on preparing for Jade's demise. The BBC has apparently issued guidance to its staff about how to play what is certainly a big, if in some people's eyes ghoulish, story. The BBC still bears the bruises of the death of the Queen Mother, when newsreader Peter Sissons announced the death wearing a burgundy tie. Many papers reacted as though he had turned up in a floral print shirt with a jester's cap on. It's an issue for the Beeb certainly but sometimes over-preparing for these events just makes them more difficult. It would be better off turning its focus on to cervical and other cancers to highlight the screening shortfalls and shortage and cost of treatments.
